Where is
Perkins Island ?
Perkins Island Oysters is
situated off the North-West Coast of Tasmania, Australia.
Tasmania has some of
the World's most beautiful untouched wilderness. Here it is possible to
experience nature at her very best, virtually untouched and
accessible to even the most timid explorer.
There are safe, sheltered beaches with crystal clear waters, rugged
mountains, peaks, coastlines, river gorges, waterfalls, tranquil ponds, hundreds of safe walks, and superb scenery.
The
oyster industry in Tasmania is based primarily on the Pacific oyster with the growing
out of hatchery spat on licensed marine farms. There is some renewed
interest in the native flat oyster to be grown out on licensed marine
farms.
The Pacific
oyster dominates production. The total area leased for oyster farming is
1,351 hectares. Of this approximately 1,051 ha. is in intertidal (shallow
water) areas and the remaining 300 ha. is suitable for sub tidal (deep
water) cultural techniques. Of the leased area approximately one-third is
developed, with another one-third suitable for development. The remaining
one-third is not suitable for oyster production using current production
techniques.
Perkins Island
growing area is situated in The North- West region of Tasmania.
Smithton is the main town in the Circular Head Municipality which has a
